Laparoscopic (Cystectomy, Myomectomy and Hysterectomy)
all gynaecological surgeries

Surgery that involves any part of a woman's reproductive system including the vagina, cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries is called gynaecological surgery . Surgical procedures of benign conditions like ovarian cyst, fibroids, uterine prolapse or other benign gynaecological masses, cancer, infertility and urinary incontinence are included in gynaecological surgery . Depending upon the purpose and other patient factors, the procedure can be done through the following routes:

  • Laparoscopic Procedure
  • Open Abdominal Procedure
  • Vaginal Procedures

Laparoscopic Surgery is performed in the abdomen and pelvic region. Laparoscope is the instrument used for laparoscopic surgery. It is a long, thin tube with a high-resolution camera at its front. A small incision is made in the abdominal wall for insertion of the laparoscope.

Laparoscopic Surgery helps in identifying and diagnosing the source of pelvic pain or abdominal pain. INon-invasive methods such as imaging tests, don’t provide enough information for diagnosis, so doctors recommend laparoscopic surgery.. It is done under the general anaesthesia. Indications of laparoscopic surgery are fibroids, cysts, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, adhesions, surgical scars etc.

Cystectomy is the surgery that is done for removal of all or a part of the urinary bladder. Sometimes it is also used for removal of a cyst. In bladder cancers , it is used for removal of urinary bladder. During the cystectomy, the bladder (entire or a part)and a part of urethra along with nearby lymph nodes are removed.

Myomectomy is the surgical procedure used to remove uterine fibroids that are the non-cancerous growths that appear in the uterus. Fibroids can happen at any age but usually occur during the childbearing years of a woman. In a myomectomy, the uterus remains preserved and the woman can retain her potential to reproduce.

Hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus when there are certain abnormalities. This surgical operation can also involve removal of the cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes and other structures nearby. Indications for hysterectomy are when uterine fibroids cause pain and bleeding or when there is uterine prolapse and cancer of the uterus, cervix or ovaries.

Gynaecological surgery involves any part of a woman's reproductive system including the vagina, cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. It includes procedures for benign or malignant conditions ,cancer, infertility and urinary incontinence. Depending upon the indication and other patient factors, the procedure can done through the following routes

  • Laparoscopic procedure
  • Open abdominal procedure
  • Vaginal produres
Open abdominal procedure

In this procedure the abdomen is opened through either a transverse 10 to 12 cm incision also called the bikini incision or a vertical incision. General anaesthesia is given in such procedures for painless surgery. With the advent of technology and advanced equipments most of the gynaecological procedures can be performed through laparoscopy. But open abdominal procedures are required in multiple cases like large fibroids , large ovarian cyst ,previous history of multiple cesareans, advanced cancer or severe surgery can be decided when laparoscopic surgery is difficult. The patient can be discharged after 2 to 3 days. The recovery takes about 3 to 4 weeks.

Vaginal Procedures

It includes doing any gynaecological surgery through the vaginal route. This procedure is done when there is Uterine prolapse, vaginal wall prolapse with cystocele, rectocele and enterocele. Vaginal procedure can be done in cases of complete perineal tears and small fistulas. Tightening of the vagina or cosmetic vaginal reconstruction can be done by vaginal surgery.
